Is plug-in solar legal in Utah?

Legal

Is plug-in solar legal in Utah? Yes. Utah signed HB 340 on 25 Mar 2025, and it took effect on 07 May 2025. The cap is 1,200 W and the device has to be certified: NEC compliance and certification by Underwriters Laboratories or an equivalent nationally recognized testing laboratory.

What the Utah law says

  • Size. Up to 1,200 W of maximum power output.
  • Safety listing. NEC compliance and certification by Underwriters Laboratories or an equivalent nationally recognized testing laboratory.
  • Telling the utility. No. The law does not ask for notice. It bars the utility from requiring approval, fees or extra equipment.

HB 340 passed the House 72-0 and the Senate 26-0 on final passage. The device must also include a feature that stops it energizing the building during an outage. In 2025 the two news sources we checked said no product met both the code and the listing requirement at the time they wrote.

What this means if you live here

The law is in force, so the question is less "is it allowed" and more "which product can I actually buy". Look at the certification line above before you pay for anything. A kit that is not listed to what the law asks for is the place people tend to get stuck.

Renters, condos and apartments

Nothing we have read about the law in Utah covers renters, landlords or condo associations, so we will not guess. Your lease and your landlord's rules still apply.

What it might save you

We have not put a Utah savings figure on this page yet, because we have not finished checking the state electricity price and a solar output figure for Salt Lake City. Our calculator is the place to try your own numbers once the US version is up. The method is on the methodology page.

How Utah compares

Other states with a law in force: Maine, Maryland and Vermont. For a different picture, see Virginia. A law in force is the easy case to understand, but the kit itself still matters.
