Privacy policy
We try to collect as little as we can get away with. This page says what that is, and what is not switched on yet.

When you just read the site
The site is hosted on Cloudflare, so Cloudflare sees your IP address and basic request details (the page you asked for, your browser type) in the normal course of serving a web page. That is how the internet works, and it is covered by Cloudflare's own privacy terms.
Our pages load fonts from Google Fonts. That means your browser makes a request to Google's servers, which will see your IP address. We would like to host the fonts ourselves instead, and it is on our list. Until then, you can block it with a content blocker and the site will still work in your browser's fallback fonts.
As of 13 Oct 2026 we set no cookies and run no analytics or advertising trackers.
Analytics, when we turn it on
We plan to use Cloudflare Web Analytics, which counts page views and where visitors come from without setting cookies or following you around the web. When it is on, this page will say so. We will also use Google Search Console and Bing Webmaster Tools, which tell us how the site appears in search. Those report on search traffic in aggregate and do not identify you.
The calculator
What you type into the calculator (a city, a kit size, a price) is used in your browser to do the sum. It is not sent to us. If you use the share or copy link button, the link contains your choices in its address. Anyone you send the link to can see those choices, and nothing more.
The alert list
We offer an email when the rules change in your state or in the UK. You can join from the alerts page or the box in the page footer. The email service is not chosen yet, so for now your address is held on a simple list that we run ourselves on Cloudflare, and no confirmation email is sent. We keep only your address, the place you chose and the time you signed up. To stop signups being abused, we also keep a scrambled (hashed) form of your connection's IP address for one hour, and we do not keep it after that. Once an email service is in place, here is what will happen:
- We collect your email address and the state or region you picked.
- We use it to send alerts about plug-in solar rules, and nothing else. We will not sell it or rent it out.
- We will use a confirmation email so nobody can sign you up without you knowing.
- Every email will have an unsubscribe link. When you use it, we stop.
- The email service we choose will store the addresses for us. We will name it here.
If you write to us
If you send a message or report a rule change, we keep what you send, including your email address if you give one, long enough to look into it and reply. If it leads to a fix, the corrections log will record the fix but not your name unless you ask us to credit you.
Your rights
If you are in the UK or the European Economic Area, you can ask what personal data we hold about you, ask us to correct or delete it, and object to how we use it. In California and some other US states you have similar rights. Ask through the contact page. At the moment the amount of personal data we hold is very small, so these requests should be quick to answer.
Children
This site is meant for adults making decisions about their homes. We do not knowingly collect information from children.
Changes to this page
When we switch on analytics, the email list or ads, we will update this page first and change the date at the top. The date means the text was actually changed, not that we looked at it.
