About SocketSun

We keep track of where plug-in solar is legal, what the rules say, and what a kit is likely to save you. Then we say when we last checked.

Why this site exists

Plug-in solar went from a curiosity to a real question in about a year. Utah signed a law in March 2025. Great Britain made it legal on 27 Aug 2026. Since then, a lot of people have been typing the same thing into a search box: can I actually do this where I live?

The answers they get are mixed. Some are news stories that were right the week they ran. Some are forum threads where one person has the details and ten others are guessing. A few are sites built to sell you a kit. We wanted one place where each rule has a date on it and a link to the law itself, so you can check us.

What we do

  • Track plug-in solar laws in every US state we have researched, and the national rules for Great Britain.
  • Read the bill or the regulation, not just the press coverage of it.
  • Put the date we last checked next to each rule, with links to what we read.
  • Build a savings calculator that shows its sums, so you can see where a number came from and change the parts you disagree with.

We write for renters, flat dwellers and homeowners who are not electricians and would like to know what they are getting into before they buy anything. If you are, the pages still hold up, but they are not written for you.

How we check things

Every rule on the site goes through two separate reads. The first is from the primary source, which means the bill page, the statute, the regulator or the government. The second comes from a different route, for example another official page or a news report that names the bill. If the two do not agree, we do not publish the claim until we know why. Some things we cannot confirm, and when that happens we say so on the page instead of guessing.

The full process, including what we do when two sources disagree, is on the methodology page. Our rules for corrections and sourcing are in the editorial policy.

What we are not

We are not lawyers, electricians or an energy company. Nothing here is legal or electrical advice. Laws on this topic are changing month to month, and a page can be out of date even when we have done our job properly. Check the date on the page, follow the link to the source, and ask a licensed (US) or registered (UK) electrician if you are unsure about your own wiring.

We do not sell installations and we do not collect quote requests. You will not find a form asking for your phone number so that someone can call you about a roof.

How the site is paid for

Right now it is not. As of 13 Oct 2026 there are no ads and no affiliate links on SocketSun. That will probably change. Running a site that is checked every week costs time, and eventually we expect to carry some advertising and a few affiliate links to kits.

When that happens, the pages that earn money will say so at the top, and the rule is simple: payment never changes a legal status, a ranking on a list or a number in the calculator. Our affiliate disclosure will be updated at the same time.

What we have not done yet

We would rather you heard this from us. We have not bought or tested a plug-in kit ourselves. Everything we say about hardware comes from manufacturer pages, product specifications and official registers, not from having one on a balcony. We plan to buy one and publish the real output readings, and we will say so when we do.

We have also not covered every state in depth. A state without its own page is not a state with no rules, it is a state we have not finished. The state tracker shows what we have.

Spotted a mistake?

Tell us. A law changing under us is the most likely way for a page here to go wrong, and readers often see it first. The contact page has a way to report a rule change, and every fix goes on the corrections log.
